Sterilization of Roma women, as was done in the former Czechoslovakia, is reportedly a continuing problem for women in what is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In October 2015, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka announced the government's refusal to compensate the Roma women who were subjected to forced sterilization between 1970 and 2009. During this time, Roma women were singled out after giving birth and sterilized forcefully or through coercion or tricks. Almost 100,000 Roma women are estimated to have been sterilized in the former Czechoslovakia. This entire situation constitutes a massive human rights violation on the part of the Czech Republic. Who knows how long it will be before Roma women don't have to live in fear of such disturbing, racist practices.
