Even though it is commonly used, the word "Gypsy" is generally considered a slur and is rarely used in Roma communities. In America, few people even know the meaning of the slur and simply think it refers to a nomadic or free spirited person. The phrase "gypped" to mean "cheated" is used without a second thought. It may seem unimportant to some, but usage of an inaccurate term that has been used to oppress and marginalize the Roma for centuries helps perpetuates the racism and stereotypes that follow Romani people, affecting their everyday lives.

"Gypsy" is used as an adjective on sites like Etsy by shop owners who thoughtlessly perpetuate the use of an ethnic slur to sell their goods. This is harmful because it degrades the meaning of the word- people don't even realize that "gypsy" is a slur referring to an ethnic group, they think it's a harmless adjective. These people then invalidate the experiences of Roma who have faced racism and harassment as "gypsies". The use of "Gypsy" as a label for certain styles of jewelry and clothing exploits the struggles of the Roma, for whom the name "Gypsy" has been a tool of oppression.
